Aim

Improve your mixed climbing technique and efficiency on steep, technical terrain by refining placements, learning advanced movements, and managing protection and transitions.

Objectives

  • Confidently move on steep mixed terrain using advanced foot and tool placements
  • Comfortably manage body positioning to maximize stability and conserve energy on overhanging or technical lines
  • Efficiently transition between rock, ice, and mixed features with flow and precision
  • Confidently place and evaluate protection (ice screws, rock gear, and fixed hardware) in mixed terrain
  • Comfortably build and clean mixed anchors in varied conditions
  • Understand route reading strategies and terrain assessments specific to mixed climbing
  • Improve lead climbing confidence (mock leads or real leads based on participant ability and conditions)

Prerequisites

  • Comfortable top roping 5.8 rock and WI4 ice
  • Prior experience with basic mixed climbing techniques (e.g., completion of Intro to Mixed Climbing or equivalent)
  • Basic understanding of anchor building and cleaning
  • Experience with ice and rock protection placement is strongly recommended
