Aim

Master the fundamentals of moving confidently on rock using crampons and ice axes, building essential skills for mixed and alpine climbing.

Objectives

  • Confident identifying environmental hazards when mixed climbing
  • Comfortable placing crampons accurately on rock and transferring from one foot to the other
  • Comfortable placing ice axes accurately on rock and “feeling” for positive holds
  • Comfortable changing between hands and ice axes
  • Comfortable matching and changing hands on ice axes
  • Comfortable shouldering tools
  • If this course is taught during ice season, understand rock/ice transitions

Prerequisites

  • Comfortable top roping 5.6 rock
  • Comfortable top roping WI4
