Develop the necessary skills to travel safely and enjoyable on skis through mountainous terrain.
Objectives
- Confident identifying environmental hazards when climbing steep waterfall ice
- Confident with the NoFall Program for Ice Climbing™ when applied to steep waterfall ice
- Confident tool swapping, tool testing, and resting while climbing
- Comfortable with the techniques for climbing mushrooms, chandelier, and thin ice
- Comfortable with traversing, stemming, and Twistlock for Ice Climbing™ technique
- Understand how steep ice features are formed and where to find the best ice protection
- Understand route selection and lead climbing strategy on steep ice
- Perform a mock lead and test ice screws in steep ice formations
Prerequisites
- Confident identifying hazards in mountaineering terrain
- Confident with glacier rope systems
- Confident putting skins on and taking skins off
- Confident putting skis on a backpack
- Comfortable with Peak Planning Procedure™ and debriefing
- Comfortable navigating using map, compass, and GPS
- Comfortable with the crevasse rescue systems
- Comfortable with glacier morphology
- Comfortable with T-slot snow anchors
- Understand how to use a technical mountaineering tool
- Understand how to walk in crampons
- Understand how an ice screw works
- Understand how to build ice anchors and v-threads
*Prerequisites are recommended for an optimum learning opportunity.
