Aim

Develop the building blocks of improvised rope rescue so that a climbing party is able to execute self rescue in basic situations.

Objectives

  • Confident tying off a belay device using the slippery overhand knot
  • Confident tying off an Italian hitch using the slippery overhand knot
  • Comfortable using the “block and tackle” to escape from an irreversible system
  • Comfortable setting up a direct haul system and adding mechanical advantage
  • Comfortable lowering with a back-up
  • Comfortable setting up a counter-balance rappel to rescue a victim below an anchor
  • Perform a series of rescue scenarios while climbing
  • Prerequisites

Prerequisites

  • Confident belaying a lead climber
  • Confident climbing 5.6 sport rock climbs
  • Confident building simple climbing anchors off 2 bolts
  • Confident top belaying a second from an anchor
  • Confident threading an anchor for lowering off or rappelling
  • Confident rappelling with a personal backup
  • Confident tying the following knots: Figure 8, Rewoven Figure 8
  • Confident tying the following hitches: Clove, Prusik
