Aim
Develop the building blocks of improvised rope rescue so that a climbing party is able to execute self rescue in basic situations.
Objectives
- Confident tying off a belay device using the slippery overhand knot
- Confident tying off an Italian hitch using the slippery overhand knot
- Comfortable using the “block and tackle” to escape from an irreversible system
- Comfortable setting up a direct haul system and adding mechanical advantage
- Comfortable lowering with a back-up
- Comfortable setting up a counter-balance rappel to rescue a victim below an anchor
- Perform a series of rescue scenarios while climbing
- Prerequisites
Prerequisites
- Confident belaying a lead climber
- Confident climbing 5.6 sport rock climbs
- Confident building simple climbing anchors off 2 bolts
- Confident top belaying a second from an anchor
- Confident threading an anchor for lowering off or rappelling
- Confident rappelling with a personal backup
- Confident tying the following knots: Figure 8, Rewoven Figure 8
- Confident tying the following hitches: Clove, Prusik
