Aim
Develop the skills to travel safely and enjoyably through introductory snow, ice, and rock terrain in the alpine. Learn basic techniques for navigating diverse alpine environments with confidence.
Objectives
- Confident navigating introductory alpine terrain using map, compass, and GPS
- Confident with Peak Planning Procedure™ and debriefing
- Confident identifying hazards in snow, ice, and rock alpine terrain
- Confident with crevasse rescue systems
- Confident walking and climbing in crampons
- Confident using a technical mountaineering tool for climbing and self-arrest
- Confident with multi-pitch anchors and rope systems
- Comfortable protecting and moving through 4th and easy 5th class alpine terrain
- Comfortable with glacier morphology and navigation
- Comfortable crossing bergschrunds
- Comfortable using terrain belays
Prerequisites
- Confident leading rock up to 5.6 with removable protection
- Confident leading waterfall ice up to WI3
- Confident with glacier travel rope systems
- Confident with self-arrest and self-belay
- Comfortable with crevasse rescue system
