Aim

Develop the skills necessary to travel safely and enjoyable through introductory snow, ice, and rock terrain in the alpine.

Objectives

  • Confident navigating introductory alpine terrain using map, compass, and GPS
  • Confident with Peak Planning Procedure™ and debriefing
  • Confident identifying hazards in snow, ice, and rock alpine terrain
  • Confident with crevasse rescue systems
  • Confident walking and climbing in crampons
  • Confident using a technical mountaineering tool for climbing and self-arrest
  • Confident with multi-pitch anchors and rope systems
  • Comfortable protecting and moving through 4th and easy 5th class alpine terrain
  • Comfortable with glacier morphology and navigation
  • Comfortable crossing bergschrunds
  • Comfortable using terrain belays

Prerequisites

  • Confident leading rock up to 5.6 with removable protection
  • Confident leading waterfall ice up to WI3
  • Confident with glacier travel rope systems
  • Confident with self-arrest and self-belay
  • Comfortable with crevasse rescue system
