Learn to Lead Rock



Learn to Lead Outdoor Rock teaches the basics of leading outdoor rock climbs. It is designed for those who are comfortable top roping either at the gym or outdoors and want to learn how to safely lead on bolt protected routes (also known as sport climbing). You will learn how to prepare for a lead climb, how to clip into protection bolts, mock leading, and cleaning anchors.

Aim

Develop the skills for safe and efficient progression towards becoming an outdoor rock leader.

Objectives
  • Confident identifying environmental hazards when lead climbing.
  • Confident building anchors using bolts or trees.
  • Confident removing quickdraws.
  • Confident rappelling with a back-up.
  • Comfortable setting up the harness for lead climbing.
  • Comfortable clipping into quickdraws.
  • Comfortable threading anchors, including making a lanyard.
  • Comfortable rappelling with a back-up.
  • Comfortable transferring weight while climbing.
  • Comfortable edging and smearing in rock shoes.
  • Comfortable assessing moderate rock grades.
  • Comfortable coiling a rope.
  • Understand the lead climbing system.
  • Understand route selection and lead climbing strategy.
  • Understand tying off the belay.
  • Perform a mock lead.
Prerequisites
  • Confident belaying a top rope climber.
  • Comfortable building simple anchors using bolts.
  • Comfortable removing quickdraws.
  • Comfortable rappelling with a back-up.
  • Confident tying the following knots: Figure 8, Rewoven Figure 8, Figure 8 on a Bight, Overhand.
  • Confident tying the following hitches: Clove, Prusik.
